CJ Studies Recognizes Graduates

On April 5th 2013 Criminal Justice Studies recognized its graduates with our 16th Annual Graduation and Awards Banquet. Catered by Trumps and held in the old Georgian Hotel building over one hundred students with their families and guests were in attendance. The guest of honor and keynote speaker was Ms. Kellie Monk. A graduate of the Criminal Justice Studies Program she was recognized in her graduation year as the Outstanding Senior. She is on faculty in the School of Law where she serves as the Director of Advocacy. She teaches courses in appellate advocacy and also serves as Director of the law school's award-winning moot court and mock trial programs.

All students present were recognized as graduates and for their programs of study as well as, if applicable, for Academic Excellence and membership in Alpha Phi Sigma. Klade Harmon and Carlon Howard were recognized as recipeints of the Sherry Lyons-Williams Scholarship while the recipients of the Kenneth M. McCarthy Scholarship were Laila Becerril and Cassie Demarco. Jacob Black received the Best Paper Award for "Demographic Disparity in Pretrial Detention Hearings in Federal Court" which he wrote in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the internship. Recognized as Outstanding Senior was Leah Gerstley. She has had extensive involvement, both on a local and international scale, volunteering with and advancing the goals of organizations dedicated to improving the life circumstances of children affected by HIV and domestic violence. She anticipates being graduated cum laude with her major in Criminal Justice Studies and a minor in Anthropology.
