Fifth Annual Talarico Lecture

Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing of the Los Angeless Police Department will deliver the 5th annual Susette M. talarico lecture at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 15th in the North Tower of the Miller Learning Center. The event is named in honor of Dr. Talarico, a long-time UGA faculaty member in the Department of Political Science and former director of the Criminal Justice Studies Program.

Annual Banquet to Honor Graduates

On April 4th, the Criminal Justice Studies Program will be recognizing those majors expecting to graduate spring, summer, and fall 2014 with our 17th Annual Graduation and Awards Banquet held at the Georgia Center. Students, family and guests will join program staff and faculty for a reception at 6:30 followed by dinner at 7:00. The guest of honor and keynote speaker will be alum Nicole M. Andrejko (2001, Criminal Justice and Sociology). All students expected to graduate in 2014 will be recognized individually for their programs of study.

CJ Affiliated Faculty Recognized for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Teena Wilhelm is this year's recipient of the School of Public and International Affairs' Excellence in Teaching Award. This annual award is given to a single faculty member in the School for outstanding instruction. Dr. Wilhelm teaches Constitutional Law and suprevises criminal justice internships.

 

Dr. Natasha Ganem has been awarded the Sandy Beaver Excellence in Teaching Award by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Ganem teaches Research Methods, Juvenile Delinquency and supervises interns.

CJ Studies Students Conduct Undergraduate Research

Criminal Justice Studies students have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research through the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO). Recently, three CJ majors have done just that.

Under the supervision of Dr. Natasha Ganem, Lindsay DeFrancesco surveyed UGA students about their attitudes towards police in the area. In her study, "Student perceptions of the police: an analysis of Greek and non-Greek affiliated students", she found that Greek students held more negative attitudes than non-Greek students.

Intern Meets Director, U.S. Marshals Service

While interning with the U.S. Marshals Service in Savannah, GA, Jenny Harris (UGA '13) attended a luncheon at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, GA.  At the lunch she met Stacia Hylton, the current Director of the U.S. Marshals Service. On meeting Ms. Hylton Jenny remarked, "She's the one  whose picture is on the wall. You never meet the person whose picture is on the wall." The Savannah office where Jenny interned falls under the Southern District whose head, Marshal Stepehn J.

Former CJ DIrector Receives National Recognition

Jody Clay-Warner, Meigs Professor of Sociology and former Director, Criminal Justice Studies, has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the American Society of Criminology Teaching Award.  This award, which was established in 2008, recognizes excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching over the span of an academic career.  It is awarded each year to an individual who has been identified as a master teacher of criminology and criminal justice.
